Cranial Location
Medial Sphenoid Wing
The sphenoid wing forms the boundary between the anterior and middle fossae; its medial third abuts the anterior clinoid, optic nerve, cavernous sinus and internal carotid artery. Medial (clinoidal) sphenoid-wing meningiomas encase these structures and threaten vision.
Anterior clinoidectomy and optic-canal unroofing, usually through a pterional or orbitozygomatic route, are central to safe resection of these challenging skull-base tumours.
