Pathology
Subdural Empyema
A subdural empyema is a loculated collection of pus in the subdural space, usually spreading from sinusitis, otitis or meningitis. It is a neurosurgical emergency because it expands rapidly and provokes seizures, venous thrombosis and cerebritis.
Treatment is urgent surgical drainage (burr holes or craniotomy) together with prolonged targeted antibiotics and control of the source of infection.
