Pathology
Encephalocele
An encephalocele is herniation of brain and meninges through a skull-base or calvarial defect, which at the skull base may present as a CSF leak or recurrent meningitis. Anterior and lateral skull-base encephaloceles are increasingly repaired endoscopically.
Repair reduces the herniated tissue and reconstructs the defect in a multilayer, watertight fashion to restore the barrier between the intracranial space and the sinonasal tract.
